We cannot overstate the The world is going through an unprecedented event. It is probably the first time since the plague in the middle ages that the entire world is literally in the same boat. Politics, wars, debts and nations’ feuds all give way in the face of one common enemy … Covid 19.

The world is forced to sit at home. Everybody is looking to protect themselves and their families. Two and a half months into quarantine and there is bound to be some after effects. People who used to go to work for several hours are now staying put, and dealing with not only their workload, but their family and children as well. All that is bound to have at least a small effect on one’s mental state, and so we try to give you our advice on how to stay sane (and keep smiling) during a quarantine.

First of all, the frustration that you feel right now is a state of mind. Try to think of this time as the vacation you have been meaning to take. This could be the family getaway that work just kept getting in the middle of. Now you are forced to stay with them, so make most of your time before you eventually have to go back to being busy. You can go online and simply search for “fun activities to do with the family” and you’ll find hundreds of ideas that you never thought you could do.

That was talking generally, on which we are definitely no experts. But the “smiling” part is where we come in.

Here are some pieces of advice to our braces-wearing patients on how to stay sane and keep smiling during a quarantine:

  • Remember to keep your braces clean:
The nature and formation of braces tend to trap food debris and plaque. It is imperative to keep the brackets –and the teeth of course- as clean as you could. We know that the appearance of braces (especially traditional metallic ones) doesn’t really conform to a great smile, but to try to think of afterwards, after you finally remove them. If you don’t keep your teeth clean during your treatment, you could expect a lot of trouble – appearance and otherwise – when they finally come off.
  • Floss, Floss, Floss:
We cannot overstate the importance of flossing, especially for braces wearers. Flossing is an absolute nightmare if you wear braces, but is also incredibly essential. If you have trouble using the traditional string floss, there are many methods to try. Interdental brushes, floss picks and water flossers have all been proven effective. All you have to do is select the method that appeals most to you.
  • Don’t be afraid to visit your dentist in scheduled times:
Orthodontics is probably the most delicate branch of dentistry. Your treating orthodontist coordinates your visits even before you begin treatment. This means that your scheduled visit is considered essential, and a missed visit could result in unwanted effects on your teeth movement. But fear not, as all dentists and dental clinics are exceptionally trained in the science of infection control. In that sense, a dentist’s office is probably the safest place you can be right now!

In the time of crisis, it is always best to go back to basics. It is your choice how you want to remember this period, either as a blessing or a curse.
