If you are considering orthodontic treatment, you have probably asked yourself the questions, “Invisalign or Braces? Which is Best for Me?” Although both treatment methods have advantages and disadvantages, making a decision on which is the best for you can be confusing.

Invisalign or Braces? Exploring the Differences

Of course, almost everyone knows that Invisalign is a nearly transparent system that uses tray aligners to straighten teeth. This system has been in use for more than 20 years and has proven its reliability. Many adults seem to prefer the nearly transparent trays over brackets and wires. The trays work to gently shift teeth into new positions by applying slight, but constant pressure.

Traditional metal braces and Clear Braces (ceramic) use brackets and wires to create tension to shift teeth. There are recorded instances of brackets and wires in use as early as 400 BC. Fortunately, technology has improved this treatment. Smaller brackets make braces more comfortable. For people wanting lower visibility, Clear Braces use transparent brackets that allow the natural color of teeth to show.

With Invisalign, there are no dietary restrictions. Many patients prefer a softer diet during the first couple of days wearing a new tray set due to minor discomfort. Because the tray aligners are removable, patients can undergo treatment without concern about food choices.

Traditional and Clear Braces do have a list of foods to avoid during treatment. The biggest reason for dietary restrictions is to avoid damaging the brackets and wires. Although strong enough to muscle teeth into new positions, the hardware remains slightly fragile.

Which is Best for You?

If cost is a factor for you, the happy news is that Invisalign and braces are comparable in cost, although Invisalign is usually slightly higher. The actual determination of which type of treatment is best for you should be made after discussing it with an orthodontist. During an examination, your orthodontist will recommend the type of treatment they feel will best correct your malocclusion.

Some of the things that will be considered are:

  • Condition of your teeth and general oral health
  • Degree of correction necessary
  • Age at time of treatment
  • Participation in sports or other physical activities

The doctor will perform a complete examination prior to making any recommendations. This will include x-rays, digital images, and an oral examination. Every smile is unique, so each treatment plan is different. While a doctor may recommend braces for one patient, Invisalign may be recommended for the next.

Whether you select Invisalign, traditional or Clear Braces, you can rest assured that Dr. Lasley and the caring staff at Centralia Orthodontics will treat you great.
